Final Post From India…Goodbyes Are Hard

Posted by Sermarr

So this is my final day...there is a raging snow storm in the northeast and I'm supposed to arrive at 6:30 am on friday...immediately after the storm has supposedly dumped a foot and a half of snow....and left....if it does what is predicted....so hope I will get in and not be stuck in Delhi for more than the 6 hour layover I already have tonight.

For those of you who have followed this journey of heart and mind and soul and skill accumulation, I thank you for your attention and comments.  I will most likely come back to India next year.  It is hard not to.  I have skills to learn and friends to help me do it

My overwhelming gratitude to Jaykirti and her workroom and house staff cannot be overstated.  She has answered my endless stream of questions about everything overarching to mundane with such good cheer and helpfulness.  She is an extraordinarily talented artist and businesswoman and a consummate hostess.  I will miss her daily company.  The staff has been very helpful in responding to pantomime and with good cheer.  I have been taken care of royally; even though not a princess, I feel like one.

Here are some final pictures of me in the workroom with the staff there. You can see that my shirt has served its purpose of wiping everything on it.

Signing off from this side of the world.   Who knows what things will come of all I've learned here.   But I am a firm believer that the best is yet to be. (and the past and current is pretty great already)

Embroidery From Paradise

Posted by Sermarr

Today on one of our final rounds Jaykirti and I stopped by the shop of Anupama, a woman whom I had met at the shop.  She does very very very high end and very very very beautiful embroidery....and tie and dye and other wonderful things.  She and I had been swapping stories of using metal scrubbing pads to make impressions when I met her.  Well, her work is over the moon gorgeous. She does some of the embroidery and tie and dye herself but also has 14 people who work for her...And her main business is high end weddings..and the dresses and work were her designs and some of the rosebud work is hers...she lamented that it is very difficult to find people who do the type of work they do, much less being able to train anyone. She was kind enough to take us into her workroom and you can see the guys sitting at the embroidery stretchers.  Because the material has to be taut to be embroidered, the fabric is stretched very tight on this stretchers and then the people sit on the floor and can work at embroidering from above and below...it makes it much easier as I have done some beginning work at this stretcher.. The young people all want to work in offices and so the art of this type of embroidery is dying.  I have to tell you that I left that shop weak in the knees from being so overwhelmed with how beautiful this work is.  I felt that every cell of my body had seen and embraced this beauty...Enjoy

Blocks Made From Rocks

Posted by Sermarr

DSCN8932 DSCN8933 DSCN8941One of the things I love about being here is being able to do lithopainting or painting with these rock treasures from construction sites.  And the block maker has made them into blocks for me to take back to the states.  Then I guess I will have a set here and a set there..

Today the workshop was humming making a number of things for me to take home...my whole spring wardrobe!! I will be festive in black-wearing NYC...

I have had in my mind to make one large last piece.  And I want it to incorporate some of the new things I've been working with.  So here is the beginning and maybe the end (i'll have to see what I think tomorrow) of "PULSE - BC/AC...So it incorporates so much of what I think is unique about this time in India  the first one is the whole thing and the other two are details

Finished All Four Pieces Today…And A New Discovery

Posted by Sermarr

The three pieces I'd been working on have been lying pinned down for the time of the opening.  I had been hand painting details on them, which always takes a while because I need time in between to go away and come back and see what needs to be done, if anything.  It's very easy to overdo something you're working on.  Someone told me that there's a story about Picasso - someone heard him while he was working on a piece and he was intoning to himself, "don't do too much" meaning not to overdo and add too much.  well, I really get the meaning of that.  especially in hand painting these ...but as usually happens, the pieces tell me when they're done.  And I can walk away having done my best.  Today I also learned how to use subtle shading with fabric dye...I know how to do this with acrylic paint but it's harder to control with fabric dye.  I mixed some of the dye with water and used a very washed out brush to drop watered soft watercolor looking shading.  Soft pink undertone shading on the edges of the blue pieces.  and on the grid work of the one I want to look 3-d So here they are:DSCN9818 DSCN9826 DSCN9828 DSCN9829DSCN9817DSCN9825 DSCN9822 DSCN9820

The Princess And The Daughter Visit – Part 11

Posted by Sermarr

the opening was on friday.  On Saturday we went to Ajmer to pick up Jaykirti's daughter at Mayo College.  I will blog about the road trip and some of the things I saw in another blog.  We picked her up and brought her home (it is her weekend pass for the semester) .  She instantly did what every teen ager does when they're away from good food, intensive study, and school - she watched every electronic device at the same time...TVTVTVTV with her laptop on and Facebook going (they don't get these at school) and ate chips....And that night the Princess came to shop at Jaykirti's.  She is a fast shopper...she also needs a lot of saris since she wears them every day.  She bought 13 of them.....the workmanship and color on them is gorgeous.  So here are some pictures of the princess and Jaykirti with her daughter

Jaykirti’s New Boutique-Friends Pitch In Part 7

Posted by Sermarr

Most wonderfully of all was that this opening was the occasion for four of Jaykirti's best friends from college to come and work to get it open.  Here they are...  And they folded and tagged merchandise and we laughed and had a great time.  These occasions reconfirm our wonderful friendships by sharing in the happiest occasions of our lives. Also shown at the opening are her mother and father...
