Today I began working on this small piece and I knew that I would need to finish it as I am off to Kota tomorrow at 5:45am on the train. So this one really got me hooked and I couldn't stop. It's called Burning The Furniture. See what you think. When I got home I was beat. DSCN2265

Extraordinary Tie Dye Pieces @ Jaykirtis’s

Posted by Sermarr

Today the masters were working on some extraordinary tie dye pieces. I think I didn't know how beautiful tie dye could be, having had t-shirts in the 70's. These are sophisticated and elegantly shaded. And then they print these beautiful designs on them.DSCN2245

Finishing Touches to Two Pieces

Posted by Sermarr

Today I worked all day at Jaykirti's trying to finish two pieces, Two Ways Out and Fractured. And I finished them. The pictures don't do either of them justice. Two Ways Out will have some stitch work done on it and then it will be finished. Here they are. DSCN2219

City Palace Splendor

Posted by Sermarr

Today, after scavenging in the neighborhood and finding wonderful "treasures", Katie and I went downtown to see the City Palace.  I've been here one month and not been to the most treasured tourist site.  It is gorgeous and very large as a Maharajah's house should be.  The Maharajah still has private quarters in part of the palace so we just get to see the part that has been opened to the public. First there is a textile museum which shows the beautiful hand work that has gone on here to make these most eye popping embroidered outfits for the royal court.  There is a carriage house and an outside reception house with huge silver urns that the Maharajah of the time used to carry water from the Ganges on a visit to England so he could have the water to bathe in.  The urns are as tall as I am and weigh so much I forgot the number.  They had to melt down some thousands of silver coins.  And then into the reception hall.  Where I got into an altercation with one of the guards.  I was taking pictures when I wasn't supposed to.  The signs were medium sized and I somehow missed registering them.  When he came over to fine me the 500 rupees (about $10) per picture that I had taken, I started erasing them and he started taking me around to show me all the signs that said no photos since I said I hadn't seen them.  By this time I'd erased the 4 pictures I'd taken and I said I wouldn't pay the fine.  He said there were cameras all around and his boss would know that I had taken them and he hadn't fined me.  I said I will show the camera me erasing them all and I wasn't going to pay the fine.  He then backed down and we left.  The best courtyard is the one with the four gates, one for each season. A peacock one, a lotus one, a rose one, and another one which I don't remember what it is.  Here they areDSCN2176 DSCN2180 DSCN2181 City Palace 13 DSCN2191 City Palace 20 City Palace 10DSCN2188 City Palace 15

Street Scenes from Jaipur

Posted by Sermarr

Here are some assorted street scenes from Jaipur.  First, a balcony that is being jack hammered as the building is being remodeled revealed that the previous one (and probably the next one) will be built with this special clay pots in the middle of a concrete sandwich.  They apparent form a vacuum when sealed and are very strong and light with pressure from above not bothering them.  ??Who knew?? I've seen them on the side of the street a lot and wondered what they were for, never suspecting that they were construction material.

Second, our nearby ironing stand.  These are scattered about and the people heat their irons by putting hot coals in them.  Then they iron on these large rock slabs.  And then they are wrapped up and put on the woman's head (although men do ironing too) and brought to your house.  Wow!

Third,  and those of you who know me well have been expecting this, a typical, if there is such a thing here, lamp/power pole with wires sticking out willy nilly.

Fourth, a bunch of pasta in bags on the sidewalk being sold.

Fifth, a door we passed on the sidewalk today.

These are not especially special but are things that I walk past and think are interesting.DSCN2083 DSCN2160 DSCN2165 Jaipur Street scenes 1 DSCN2171

Fractured…Organic Forms added

Posted by Sermarr

Today I went to the studio and worked all day on Fractured.  This piece is a pivotal piece for me here.  It is on wheat colored silk and so colors really fade into it.  The geometric shapes in the back were originally bright turquoise and bright lavendar.  But they have faded into shadows.  This is a good effect to use. However, the colors that will show up are very limited- Black/white/red/gold/silver....not necessarily the most subtle colors and not ones that will necessarily work on what I'm trying for here in Fractured.  So the organic forms are red on one side and orange on the other.  Overprinted many times.  But I've learned that I need to use the fading color and then put an outline in chocolate or something...I like where this is going but it's not there yet!DSCN2137

Jaykirti’s Block Masters’ Magic…See It and Don’t Believe It

Posted by Sermarr

So I went to the workshop today with my head full of ideas. I got there and they had made some small pictures on scrap fabric with the new blocks that I had had made.  It was great fun to see how they were combined.  And a peacock or something was added...I don't think it was a character comment.  So here they are. And also some more of the artistry that goes on there.  They think it's just a normal day, but what they make is amazing to me. I am including the detail of the embroidery that their embroiderer is doing with silver thread.  You fabric lovers/fashion lovers enjoyo!!DSCN2073 DSCN2122 DSCN2126 DSCN2127 DSCN2128 DSCN2129 DSCN2156 DSCN2079 DSCN2082
