Unholy Trinity. Much progress

Posted by Sermarr

Today was a wonderful day full of experiments and success. I've been working on painting the background of Unholy Trinity. So I painted nine washes of different colored paint on the background to give it a radiating glow and to highlight the pieces. And give shadows and lighting and dimensionality. So here it is with all the elements.

Unholy Trinity. Very different thing emerged

Posted by Sermarr

Today I worked on painting the giant cross that was made to become one of the unholy trinity. The piece is in flux in its direction. I think it's changed from being a victimizing giant figure with two smaller pieces into being a self sacrificing single figure. But it's not clear yet. It's just being thought about in the back of my head until tomorrow
Kathleen worked in the studio on poems and then we worked together on this figure after I got the edges primed, gessoed and painted Here it is so far. The large pieces are submarine molds from WW2

Endpoints? Is new name for alpha/omega piece

Posted by Sermarr

I had a significant amount of trouble settling on the figures in each of these pieces and an even more significant struggle with colors to put together on these pieces. Since they represent the beginning and end of a person's life on this planet they have to capture the glory and pain that life can be…and some of the drudgery. So here they are not yet finished but close,I think.

Alpha and Omega piece begun

Posted by Sermarr

The mother of a friend has been discovered to have colon cancer and in terminal stages. At an accomplished age of 88 she will soon pass through the portal that none of us understand well but which mean the end of our ongoing real time association with them. I'm making this piece to tellyself something about our lives' beginnings and ends. Here is the beginning. It's a diptych

Less is more…back to work in consolidated studio

Posted by Sermarr

The studio still has lots of stuff that needs to go but at least I'm reorganized and able to make pieces in the more consolidated rear part of the studio. I'm saving space in the front for furniture/art storage. I will be emptying and renting my house and moving to NYC in the spring after I return from India.
It seems very strange. I feel alternately completely unattached to my things that I live with and sometimes very possessive of them. I think it's part of letting go. I need to have less is more as my mantra and deciding tool. I was able to do this in Vermont and I am now doing it here. The art I lived with for a long time, some of it made by friends, will be the hardest to let go. But I ask the question of each piece "can I live without you?" And sometimes I'm surprised to say "yes,I can let you go" to pieces I've had for over twenty years. And my closet is now almost empty as I've asked the same question for clothes. Since I've worn almost every day my painting clothes I feel less attached to almost everything in the closet. And western clothes are not eastern clothes, I learned when I moved from NYC to California
So here's my now working studio!

Unholy Trinity…collaboration with poet

Posted by Sermarr

My workman and I spent a lot of time making an 8 foot cross. It will be the centerpiece for an unholy trinity representing the poems that my friend the Piet, kathleen, has written. Here is it with suggestions of the two people below the outstretched arms

Out with the old…cleaning the studio

Posted by Sermarr

Today, just as yesterday, was spent taking out things not used in the last year…shelving, objects, boards…and reorganizing everything do there's more space on the floor and on the walls. 8 hours yesterday and nine today. Seems like a good annual practice. Because I make "compounds" I have many different types of things in my studio. Peach pits, mica, all kinds of string/cord, lots of different fabrics, boards for painting on, found objects, etc. and sometimes I think they'll make a great contribution, so I pick them up, and then they don't seem to fit. So it's out with the old because something new is always being found! Here's my messy but more spacious studio now.

Landscapes continued again

Posted by Sermarr

Many stitches later here they are…with some details of their components. I really like how these different elements form a greater "compound" I am learning a lot about the different properties of these elements by using them in such a small format as this 9x12 inch piece. I will gradually move up to larger pieces

Landscapes…continued

Posted by Sermarr

I am very crowded in my studio. Three huge boxes are here waiting to be cut down and taken away. There are too many things scattered around. Tomorrow we clean up and throw out a lot My mantra for this one year clean out is: more floor space, more wall space! Trying to reduce it by half so I can use the space to store my furniture.when I leave for NYC in the spring
Here are my two landscapes. I added some other "compounds" to help this compound have more power.
