On the Cross

Posted by Sermarr

This came out of thinking about how many people I know who complain a lot about the terrible things that other people or some karma of the universe has done to them and are still doing. I catch myself too saying "ain't it awful" in numerous ways too often. This is for us all, radiant articulate victims.

Black and White. New piece started

Posted by Sermarr

Today I was thinking about how people can sometimes draw a line in the sand and exclude anyone on the outside, even if the person has been a friend for a long time. Judge and jury of one convene their own court and pronounce judgement, sometimes without even having the other person heard, and declare them " guilty" of disappointing.
And never talk to or see them again. This piece is about black and white thinking and how it can create such pain. This kind of thinking makes decisions so much easier. And loses so much of the nuance of humans

Silos

Posted by Sermarr

I worked on this a very little bit but enough to begin to pull out these silos. This piece reminds me of living in NYC and also big corporations and how people and activities are grouped into silos. In NYC, the diamond district. In a big company, the programming division. And it's easy to see why that's good and and also can be detrimental as it separates knowledge and people

Rompecabeza. The back and the front

Posted by Sermarr

After stitching for most of the day I am really tired. And Rompecabeza is much more vested with iconic symbols and patterns of the overlaps in our lives. This has been really challenging to make. So I'll show you the underside and the front.

Rompecabeza is a work of many stitches

Posted by Sermarr

Today continues the myriad types of stitching and designs with 3D objects. I am so interested in what is happened as the layers continue to be needed. It seems to be about the complexity of life and the puzzle pieces we have affixed and where we put them. Here are some

Rompecabeza is getting more 3-D pieces

Posted by Sermarr

Today I started by cutting four inch dowel pieces from a long dowel I had gessoed. They had seemed like they were going to be inserted into the piece vertically like pegs but only one of those survived, so far. The others got tied down with beautiful cord and wire and a whole new "fence" piece came into being in the middle. I had already tried it on a separate table but it fit in exactly where I wanted it to. The pieces are like puzzle pieces in our life puzzle: some tied down, some floating, some in play circling around trying to fall into place

Day off yesterday

Posted by Sermarr

I took the day off yesterday so I would not meltdown from all the tasks to do, pieces to complete and new ideas whirling around in my head. It was great. I saw a telecast opera full of wonderful Baroque music, great singers, sets and projected pieces that helped make the magic work
So now I'm back refreshed and off to the races again

Here is the overview picture with all the objects stitched down. And one detailed example of a stitched section.

Rompecabeza has been stitched up!

Posted by Sermarr

So after more hours of looking at wires I began to stitch Rompecabeza together. Whew! What a task to bend over and under the table looking for the right holes. But it has such beautiful stitching and the colors just seemed to fall in their proper place (after I had to take out about six wrong ones). Here are some pictures of the threading process. Later I will talk about what the images mean to me, but I have to go eat. I'm hungry

“More!” has been embedded

Posted by Sermarr

I have been working on More! for over a year. The pieces were chosen, the routing had been done to embed the objects, and recently the paint had been applied. And today it came together. It is strange to see it from the side. And there are some other pieces that are supposed to go on it but it is breathing now and we're looking at each other across the room. This is about how we all want more no matter where we are in the hierarchy. Those that are hungry want food;those that are rich want more wealth/houses/boats/jewelry. And it seems that all that red hot burning intensity is centered just around us. The outside seems grey and may have nothing to offer but we reach out to get it. His ear is huge to hear of anything else he could want; his hands reach out, one with great charm and ease and the other clawed and overreaching. And his legs are constantly on the move pumping forward. And his heart adds always to see if he's falling behind. Eerie, isn't he?
